But the real gem here is the disc from the Munich-based Ensemble Phoenix, directed by the American abroad Mr. Frederiksen: a widely varied collection of musical Americana rendered with consistent beauty and restraint.

Ensemble Phoenix makes ancient music come alive.
Süddeutsche Zeitung, February 14, 2010
Ensemble Phoenix Munich (EPM) was founded in 2003 by Joel Frederiksen, American bass and lutenist. The ensemble focuses on music of the Renaissance and early Baroque, but does not limit itself to any one epoch exclusively. Programs range from Medieval to contemporary music reflecting the interests of its artistic leader, Joel Frederiksen. This freshness of programming is reflected in its concert series "Between Mars and Venus" in Munich (Germany), begun in 2007 and held at the Bavarian National Museum and the Herz-Jesu Church. EPM records mainly for harmonia mundi France.

Successful concert on the 1st of October: "Love's Triumph"
The first concert of the Series Between Mars and Venus IX offered an insightful look at the connection between East and West in music. Joel Frederiksen with his lute and the Syrian virtuoso singer Rebal Alkhodari with his oud, sang to Love in all of its various forms. Accompanied by Mohamad Fityan (arabian flute) and Vladimir Ivanoff (percussion), they succeeded at building a bridge between both worlds. Coming at this time of crisis the concert was especially poignant and powerful.
Thanks to the US Consulate in Munich and the Bavarian Radio for their support.
